Vimy Ridge
Hello there,
I would like to tell you about present day Vimy Ridge a place where i will visit in my life, i've promised myself that.
Vimy Ridge in france is actually Canadian Soil. The French Government Gave it to us as a gift to comemerate the battle were tens of thousands of men lost their lives. It is now a conservation area and will be preserved for years to come so the next generations can learn about Canada's fight for freedom. As you walk toward to main park from the enterance if you look to the side you will see scattered trees and lush grass, but your not allowed to stray from the path for the scared land full of crevases and mounds is full of live ammunition, many shells shot off in the baattle never detonated and now they are as dangerous as landmines. A reminder that the effects of war last forever. Oh and those trees, they were planted one for each Canadian who lost their life. 11,285 trees were planted. The main park is at the top of the ridge and looks out for miles over the beautiful french landscape. There is also a monument with the names of the dead a picture of it is above. There is also a statue looking out over the landscape surrounding the ridge which represents Canada morning the loss of her sons.
The original bunkers are also preserved and there are tours given that take you through them. The very treches where the brave spilled their blood for our nation. I can;t imaging walking through those trenches and not letting your emotions get the best of you. Tears out of pride, tears of that overwhelming sense of nationalism, truly understanding what it means to be a Canadian. I read that until you see them you will never get a true sense of how close the threches were to each other.
I would just be so powerful
It's something I have to do in my life
Lest we forget,
-Pete-
